Post by Admin Tue Jun 08, 2010 7:33 pm

There are active voice and passive voice in English language. What are they actually?
How do we change sentences from active voice to passive voice?

the active voice is the "normal" voice. This is the voice that we use most of the time. We maybe already familiar with the active voice. In the active voice, the object receives the action of the verb.
while the passive voice is less usual. In the passive voice, the subject receives the action of the verb.

When changing a sentence to the passive voice, the direct object becomes the subject of the sentence.

Thanks Amirah for the explanation of active voice and passive voice. Can anyone give some specific examples to make it clearer?

If the subject of the sentence is the person or thing doing the acting, then the verb is in active voice.

Examples:

My boss made the decision yesterday.

Doug coordinated the meeting in Paul’s absence.

We proposed the change last week.

The computer just crashed.

If the subject of the sentence is the person or thing receiving the action, then the verb is in passive voice.

Examples:

The decision was made by my boss yesterday.

The meeting was coordinated by Doug in Paul’s absence.

The book was taken by Ali last night.

Don't worry girls. It's good that you ask so we can understand the topic better.

I suppose Syuhadah had made it quite clear to us about active voice. It is a sentence in which the subject is the person or thing doing the action.
For example, 'My boss made the decision yesterday.'

Passive voice is a bit more tricky. It is used when the focus is on the action, not the subject. We don't care so much of who has done the action.
For example, 'The decision was made yesterday'. (note that 'the boss' is not mentioned)

In other words, sentences in active voice and passive voice tell us the same thing but with a different focus. Active voice focuses on the subject while the subject in passive voice is usually left out or less emphasised (because the position will be placed at the end of the sentence instead of in the beginning).

Please do not hesitate to ask for further clarification of the above information. You can 'google' for further information about passive voice too Wink When we have all gain a good understanding of what are active voice and passive voice, let's look at the ways to convert active voice to passive voice and vice versa Wink

Don't worry if you don't understand. Being confused is the first step of learning. After confusing you, we'll try to practise step by step. We'll begin with sentences in simple present tense:

E.g. He opens the door. (active voice)

1. If we want to change it to passive voice, we'll put the object 'the door' in the beginning of the sentence.
e.g. The door.....

2. The verb 'opens' will be changed to this structure:
'verb to be' + past participle
(* 'verb to be' - is/are/am in this case as the verb 'opens' is in simple present tense)
(* past participle - can be found in the last column of the Verb Table that I've asked you to memorise)
e.g. is opened

3. The subject 'he' will be introduced with the 'by' phrase.
e.g. 'by him'

So, to rewrite the above example into passive voice:
The door is opened by him.

Please complete the exercise at http://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar/passive/exercises?simple-present and tell me how you do Wink

I recommend that you watch these 2 videos too.

Good job, Amalina.

About question no. 8:
He ___ responsible for the accident.
'was held' is the correct answer as the structure for passive voice is 'verb to be' + past participle (the last column of the verb table that I've asked you to memorise)

Post by Admin Mon Jun 21, 2010 4:38 am

Amalina: You have got the idea of what is passive voice. The difference between your answer and the correct answer is the difference in time. You have given the past tense form instead of present tense. Note the tenses used in the sentences given in the exercise http://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar/passive/exercises?simple-present

If the sentences in active voice are in simple present tense,
e.g. He opens the door
then the sentences in passive voice should also be in the present form:
e.g. The door is opened by him.
(is/are/am + past participle --> for sentences in simple present tense)

If the sentences in active voice are in simple past tense,
e.g. He opened the door
then the sentences in passive voice should also use the form of past tense:
e.g. The door was opened by him.
(was/were + past participle --> for sentences in simple past tense)

Farah: Glad to hear that you learn something from the video Wink What part is it that you don't quite understand?

Zaidat: Yes..they are the same in concept but different in structure.
